Comic books depict a world where struggles between good, evil, and the morally ambiguous are a matter of life and death. As grandiose as these events may be, many of these narratives can stem from reality, evolving from true struggles that their protagonists have suffered.
Established 80 years ago, comic book narratives still heavily reflect the demographic of their social eras. Over the years, the introduction of African Americans into comics has been gradual and occasionally contentious. In 1963, Stan Lee and Jack “King” Kirby’s X-Men told the story of a noble (but light-skinned) minority struggling against people who refused to accept him due to their ignorance and fear, a subtle but powerful nod to the racial injustice of the time. Kirby, a comic legend and proponent of civil rights, created the first mainstream, black hero, Black Panther, three years later.
In honor of Black History Month, let’s take a look at superhero comics who feature real-life African Americans.One of the most notable appearances of a real person in a superhero comic is the legendary Muhammad Ali. In Superman vs. Muhammad Ali (1978), the world-famous boxer battles the Man of Steel for the role of Earth’s champion against an invading alien horde. Only the bombastic Ali would declare himself a superior warrior to Superman.
Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Clay) earned, lost and regained the Heavyweight Champion title three times over his career, during which he also earned an Olympic gold medal…and recorded a very interesting live album of poetry and unusual comedy skits. While young Clay spend his youth learning how to box as a method of self-defense in Louisville, Kentucky, the adult Ali spent much of his boxing career promoting himself with a charmingly narcissistic flair, and using the same passionate charisma when fighting for civil rights. Part of this fight was a name change to show solidarity: Ali was dubbed “Cassius X” by Malcolm X. He kept this name for less than one day before the Nation of Islam, who once refused Ali’s entry due to his fighting career, christened him with the venerable title of ‘Muhammad Ali.’
By the time of the publication of this Superman comic, Ali had lost and regained the Heavyweight title twice, once because of draft evasion. (Superman would also land himself in trouble for “anti-American” behavior, many years later). While Ali would regain the title a third time, this comic marked the beginning of the end of his boxing career.
Once a friend of Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X (born Malcolm Little) has been the subject of multiple biographical comics. Struggles are the bread and butter of comics, so his presence on the visual page is unsurprising. Malcolm Little was the product of a tumultuous childhood: his father and uncle were murdered during his youth, and his mother was confined to a mental hospital. Little discovered the Nation of Islam while in prison for breaking and entering, and this revelation would change the course of his life, encouraging him to vocally and actively fight for civil rights, and change his name to ‘Malcolm X.’ Growing disillusionment with the group’s leadership convinced Malcolm X to depart, and less than a year later, he would be assassinated by the same group he once represented.
Because the story of his life is controversial, multiple authors and artists have tried to capture his story within the pages of a comic. Artist Sue Coe created graphic depictions of Malcolm X’s life in The Life and Times of Malcolm X (1986), and noted comic artist Michael Avon Oeming created another biographical series of comics, as well as The Assassination of Malcolm X in 1993.
Barack Obama is a triumphant reflection of decades of fighting for racial equality. Not only is Obama the first African-American president, but his presence in pop culture is also very strong, just like his predecessors Abraham Lincoln (vampires, anyone?) and Bill Clinton (hello, ladies’ man). Comic books have positioned Obama as a muscle-clad barbarian warrior, visiting Archie’s town of Riverdale, fighting zombies with Ash from Army of Darkness, hanging out with Spider-Man, and of course, simply being the President.
Of course, a senator from Chicago doesn’t usually fight dragons, but Obama is a man who captures the imagination. A community organizer, a civil rights attorney, and a law educator, Obama’s election as president was quickly followed by the award of the Nobel Peace Prize. Obama’s tenure as President has been replete with important events: the end of the US involvement in the Iraq War, the death of Osama bin Laden, and an epic battle against a struggling economy…which is probably a lot scarier than fighting dragons anyhow.
As a comic character, Barack Obama is joined by both his wife, Michelle, and the family dog, Bo, both of whom have appeared in biographical comicsCountless other figures from black history have also appeared in comics, most notably in the Golden Legacy series. While the publisher calls these “not a comic magazine, but a new approach to the study of history,” telling stories in illustrated panels pretty much still falls under the category of comic. Different issues of this series focus on Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr., and other lesser-known names like Amistad-defendant Joseph Cinque, explorer Matthew Henson, and almanac author Benjamin Banneker.Superhero tights aren’t just for men anymore. Over the past few years, the females of the comic book world have been getting a bigger share of the spotlight, much to the delight of fans everywhere. From female team leaders such as Storm and Wonder Woman, to all-girl super groups like the Birds of Prey, the comic book industry has diversified its view on the sexes and has presented women just as heroically and three dimensionally as the men.
But these women aren’t built like the burly gym teachers who terrorized you in high school; they’re just as feminine and sexy as any man could ever hope for. And recently comic artists have been drawing these buxom bombshells with shocking precision and sexuality. Hope and Crosby. Martin and Lewis. In the animated world, Rocky and Bullwinkle are the comedy team who saves the day. Rocky's unending optimism coupled with Bullwinkle's lucky mishaps save their pelts every time. The duo starred in Rocky and His Friends, which premiered in 1959. His bulging forearms, squinty eyes and staccato chuckle are recognized by many generations.Dr. Seuss created many characters who made the leap from books to TV, but none as easily and successfully as The Grinch. The holiday special, starring Boris Karloff, first aired in 1966. Now an annual holiday favorite, his turn from selfish to selfless promotes the true meaning of Christmas.Fred Flintstone is the forerunner to Homer Simpson and Family Guy's Peter Griffin. The Flintstones premiered in 1960, modeled after The Honeymooners, the first made-for-TV primetime cartoon. Fred was the first portly animated husband who had a hot wife, not enough brains for his schemes and a bad temper. Yet, he loved his family.Introduced on TV in A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965, this comic strip staple became a holiday tradition. And if you look at Homer's profile, a bit of his hair and his ear form the initials "M G."The Monster High cartoon series, doll diaries and Monster High books focus on new girl Frankie Stein and her "ghoulfriends", their boyfriends and crushes, and the teachers and staff of Monster High.At the age of 15 days old, Frankie Stein is new to Monster High. She is the daughter of Dr. Frankenstein's monster and his bride. Frankie is very friendly and athletic, but has a clumsy streak, as her body parts tend to fly off. Her pet is a puppy named Watzit. is the daughter of Count Dracula, but she's a vegan vampire and does not drink blood. She is 1,600 years old. Draculaura is friendly and very sweet, and develops crushes easily. She loves fashion and is a big fan of pink and black. She can walk in the sun using a parasol, but cannot turn into a bat yet. Her pet is a bat named Count Fabulous.Clawdeen Wolf is the daughter of the Werewolf (also known as the Wolf Man). She is 15 years old, and is covered with fur, with two piercings in each of her wolf ears. She is confident, outgoing, friendly and fashionable. Her favorite color is gold. Her pet is a spider - Memphis "Daddy O" LonglegsDeuce Gorgon is the son of the gorgon, Medusa. He likes to skateboard and is interested in cooking. He wears sunglasses to prevent his turning other people to stone temporarily. One of his friends is a human named Jackson Jekyll. He is in a relationship with Cleo de Nile. His pet is PerseusHolt Hyde is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hyde. He is a DJ and has a pet chameleon, Crossfade. He is in the book just with the name "DJ Hyde". DJ has a major crush on Frankie Stein and calls her "Firecracker" because she sparks him. His alter ego is Jackson Jekyll. Holt was introduced in the October release of the 'Basic' and appeared for the first time in "Hyde and ShriekJackson Jekyll is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Jekyll. He is a new kid at school, and believes he is a "normie", because he is unaware of his dual nature. In the Monster High books he has a crush on a girl named Melody Carver; he later finds out who he truly is. He was first introduced in the Gloom Beach doll set and appeared as a student on the Monster High site in May of 2011, and his bio was added to the site in July. His first cartoon appearance was in "Fear Pressure". His alter ego is Holt Hyde. He has a chameleon pet called CrossfadeGillington "Gil" Webber is the son of the River Monster. He wears a helmet containing water on his head when he is on dry land. Gil was first seen in the webisode "Blue Lagoona" as the object of Lagoona Blue's crush, and later started a relationship with herAn arrogant fire elemental whose head catches on fire when he becomes excited or crushes on someone. Heath Burns is a showoff with a proclivity for bragging. His hotshot attitude is rather off-putting to the others, and usually ends up looking foolish because of it. He is the cousin of Jackson Jekyll/Holt Hyde and in the books has sister called Harmony Burns, though whether that is her real name or normie name is unclearThe object of Ghoulia Yelps's crush, Moe "Slow-Moe" Deadovitch is a zombie, and he wears a letterman jacket. He is one member of the school Casketball and Chess teams. Moe has shown to be fairly stoic and good natured. His first appearance was in the webisode "Cyrano de Ghoulia". He hates Heath playing guitar, and destroys the instrument once he starts.Icon - Clawd WolfOne of Clawdeen's older brothers, Clawd Wolf pretty down to earth and straight to the point. He is on the football and casketball teams at Monster High. He dated Cleo de Nile before she went out with Deuce. He was introduced in the webisode "Fur Will Fly". Draculaura develops a huge crush on him in the webisode "Beast Friends". His pet is RockseenaToralei Stripe is an orange werecat who appears in Volume 2 of the webisodes. Her bio was added to the Monster High website in July 2011. She and her friends, the Werecat Twins, quit the fearleading squad in the webisode "Scream Building", leaving Cleo in the lurch. They later continue to sabotage and gossip about the ghoulfriends, though their plans usually backfire. Her pet is Sweet Fangs.The Werecat Twins, Purrsephone and Meowlody, were on the fearleading squad with Cleo and Toralei, but they quit when the entire team walked out in the webisode "Scream Building"
Since comics always reflect both the popular and social culture during the time in which they were created, observing a comic from any era can be a telling experience. Whether they’re superheroes or just mere mortals, African Americans have found an important place in comics.
